Custom Common Mode Chokes for Industrial IoT Gateways

An industrial automation manufacturer was developing an IoT gateway for factory equipment, sensors, and industrial communication networks. The gateway needed to operate close to motors, switching power supplies, relays, and other equipment that could generate electromagnetic interference.

During EMC testing, the prototype showed unstable communication at certain operating conditions. The customer also found that the signal quality changed after the gateway was installed inside the final metal enclosure. The original filter used a standard common mode choke, but its impedance, winding structure, size, and installation position were not fully matched to the actual circuit.

Golden Eagle reviewed the gateway schematic, signal type, operating frequency, common mode noise range, differential mode requirements, rated current, insulation conditions, PCB space, and installation environment. The goal was to develop a custom common mode choke that could suppress unwanted noise without creating excessive signal loss or unnecessary voltage drop.

The engineering team adjusted the core material, winding arrangement, wire diameter, turns, terminal position, and component dimensions according to the customer's application. For high-frequency communication lines, the choke design had to balance impedance and signal integrity. For power input lines, current capacity, DCR, temperature rise, and insulation performance required additional evaluation.

The component was tested together with the customer's PCB, communication cable, power supply, and enclosure. This system-level validation helped identify the actual source of interference instead of relying only on separate component measurements. The testing process included inductance, impedance, DCR, insulation, temperature rise, communication stability, conducted noise, and radiated interference evaluation.

The customized common mode choke gave the customer a more suitable EMI suppression solution for the industrial IoT gateway. It also helped reduce repeated circuit adjustments during EMC testing and provided a clearer basis for final PCB and enclosure design.

When sourcing a custom common mode choke, buyers should provide the circuit diagram, signal or power-line type, operating frequency, rated current, target impedance, DCR limit, insulation requirements, PCB footprint, environmental temperature, cable structure, and expected annual quantity.
