The role of the coil and the core

The function of the coil and the iron core is to increase the strength of the magnetic field, and the iron core can concentrate the magnetic field lines around the coil from the iron core. Without an iron core, the magnetic induction between the coils is smaller. Magnetic circuits, like circuits, always look for places with low reluctance (resistance). The magnetic resistance of the iron core is much smaller than that of air, so the magnetic flux travels from the iron core.

When an iron core is inserted inside an energized solenoid, the iron core is magnetized by the magnetic field of the energized solenoid. The magnetized core also becomes a magnet, so that the magnetism of the solenoid is greatly enhanced due to the superposition of the two magnetic fields on top of each other. In order to make the electromagnet more magnetic, the iron core is usually made hoof-shaped.

However, note that the upper coil of the hoof core is wound in opposite directions, clockwise on one side and counterclockwise on the other side. If the winding direction is the same, the magnetization of the core by the two coils will cancel each other out, making the core non-magnetic. The core of the electromagnet is made of soft iron and cannot be made of steel. Otherwise, once the steel is magnetized, it will remain magnetic for a long time and cannot be demagnetized, and its magnetic strength cannot be controlled by the magnitude of the current, resulting in uncontrollable magnetism of the electromagnet.
