Old He and his wife ran a mold shop in Dongguan, specializing in precision molds, and had built a solid reputation in the industry. But earlier this year, they landed a job that nearly drove him mad. The customer required the mating step (flash line mismatch) of the product to be controlled within 0.005mm. After hanging up, He felt deeply unconvinced. What exactly is 0.002mm? One twenty-fifth the thickness of a human hair. In his 30 years of moldmaking, the most precise mold he had ever made could only achieve 0.005mm. How could a molded plastic part possibly have a mating step smaller than the mold itself? Instead, they employed a combination of slow wire EDM and mirror EDM (electrical discharge machining), achieving a surface roughness of less than Ra0.05 on the mold parting line. More critically, they applied dynamic pressure-holding during injection molding, adding extra pressure exactly at the parting line so the plastic was packed more densely at the moment the mold closed. He stood by the machine for two hours without saying a word.

After returning, He proactively contacted the customer and said, "This order really should go to Fengchuang." The customer later reported that in the first batch of 5,000 units made by Fengchuang, the measured mating step ranged from 0.0018mm to 0.0023mm – all within spec. The customer's quality director posted on social media: "Four mold shops couldn't achieve this mating step; Fengchuang did it to 0.002mm. This is the difference between professionals and the rest." He saw that post and was silent for a long time. Then he called a meeting with his own shop's technicians and said, "We still have a lot to learn."
