【199】Workshop 5S Rankings Always at the Bottom – Fengchuang‘s Truss Layout Turns Messy Cables into a Plus Point

Keywords: Truss Layout Fengchuang Plastics Workshop Management 5S on Site

Xiao Chen is a production supervisor at an injection molding factory. His company conducts 5S on‑site evaluations every quarter. Other departments always win awards, while Xiao Chen’s team consistently ranks last. What’s the problem? The workshop’s pipes and cables. Other departments could score points by wiping machines, mopping floors, and organizing tools. But Xiao Chen’s workshop had too many machines and too many lines. No matter how he tidied up, the tangled mess overhead remained a deduction trap that he could never escape.

He tried bundling cables with zip ties; he tried covering them with cable ducts. But every time a new machine was added and new lines were pulled, the chaos returned. His supervisor said, “Can’t you do what Fengchuang Plastics did – use a truss to organize the piping neatly?” Xiao Chen asked, “What’s a truss?” The supervisor replied, “Look it up yourself.”

Xiao Chen searched online for images of Fengchuang’s workshop and saw a truss‑based piping system for the first time. It suddenly clicked: This is how piping should be done! Not dragged on the floor, not tangled on the ceiling, but elevated on a steel‑truss structure – water, air, and electricity routed separately, each line in its fixed position. He contacted Fengchuang that very day to learn about their truss design.

Three months later, Xiao Chen’s workshop completed its truss renovation. In that quarter’s 5S evaluation, his department took first place for the first time. The judge’s comment read: “Piping layout is exemplary – a benchmark for the company’s 5S standards.” Xiao Chen hung the award plaque at the workshop entrance and told his workers, “Half of this plaque belongs to Fengchuang.” Today, his workshop has become an internal training site, with other departments coming to learn from their truss layout solution.

Workshop 5S rankings always penalized for messy piping? Fengchuang’s truss layout turns tangled lines into a highlight – taking you from last place to the benchmark.
