Late last year, a hearing aid manufacturer approached us. Their micro-coil supplier had suddenly ceased production, and they urgently needed a replacement. They had searched everywhere but found that fewer than three domestic factories could produce such small coils – and all of them quoted lead times of two to three months. Their procurement manager was anxious: "We can't afford a production stoppage. Can you help us in an emergency?"

I took them to our microscope to look at a batch of hearing aid coils we were producing – just 0.5mm in diameter, smaller than a sesame seed.
