Custom Antenna Coils for Smart Meters and IoT Devices

Introduction

Smart meters, wireless sensors, asset trackers, and access-control devices often need an antenna coil inside a very limited space. The coil may work near a battery, PCB, cable, shield, plastic housing, or metal part, so its final performance depends on more than nominal inductance.

Wire diameter, number of turns, coil geometry, Q factor, winding tension, installation position, surrounding materials, and the matching circuit can all influence communication stability.

The anonymized case

An IoT equipment developer was designing a compact wireless sensor for a utility-monitoring application. The first prototype used a general-purpose antenna coil. Communication performance was acceptable in an open test fixture, but the range changed after the coil was installed in the final housing.

Tests included inductance, Q factor where applicable, dimensions, terminal position, RF performance, communication range, assembly tolerance, and the influence of the battery and nearby materials.

After the coil geometry and installation method were reviewed together, the customer obtained a more consistent prototype platform for final RF tuning. The project also reduced uncertainty before supplier qualification and production planning.

  • Battery, shielding, and nearby-metal locations;

  • Housing material and assembly tolerance;

  • Environmental requirements, sample quantity, annual demand, and destination market.

Conclusion

A custom antenna coil is part of the complete RF system, not an isolated wire component. Early cooperation between the coil supplier, PCB designer, mechanical engineer, and product owner can improve dimensional consistency and reduce unexpected changes after assembly.
