Improving the Q value of inductor coils: Golden Eagle Electronics has some ingenious solutions


The quality factor Q is an important parameter for evaluating the quality of a coil. How to increase the Q value of a coil can be regarded as the core technology in winding coils. The following are several methods used in Golden Eagle's electronic coil winding:


1. Select the wire for the coil based on the working frequency. For low-frequency sections, inductance coils are generally wound using insulated wires such as enameled wires. In circuits with frequencies higher than several thousand hertz but lower than 2 MHz, using multiple insulated wires to wind the coil can effectively increase the cross-sectional area of the conductor, overcome the influence of the skin effect, and increase the Q value by 30% - 50% compared to the coil wound with a single wire of the same cross-sectional area. In circuits with frequencies higher than 2 MHz, inductance coils should be wound with a single thick wire, with the wire diameter generally ranging from 0.3 mm to 1.5 mm.


2. Select high-quality coil cores to reduce dielectric loss. In circuits operating at higher frequencies, such as in the shortwave band, use high-frequency dielectric materials, such as high-frequency ceramics, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polystyrene, as the cores, and use the inter-winding method for winding. If ordinary coil cores are used, the dielectric loss will significantly increase.


3. Selecting appropriate coil dimensions can reduce losses. For a single-layer coil with a certain outer diameter (φ20mm - 30mm), the loss is minimized when the ratio of winding length L to outer diameter D is 0.7. For multi-layer coils with a certain outer diameter, when L/D = 0.2 - 0.5 and t/D = 0.25 - 0.1, the loss is minimized. Under the condition that the relationship between winding thickness t, winding length L and outer diameter D is 3t + 2L = D, the loss is also minimized. For coils with a shielding cover, the best ratio is L/D = 0.8 - 1.2.


4. The use of magnetic cores can significantly reduce the number of coil turns. By using magnetic cores in the coil, the number of turns can be decreased. This not only reduces the resistance value of the coil but also increases the Q value, thereby reducing the volume of the coil.


5. Under possible conditions, it is advisable to choose a larger diameter for the coil, which is beneficial for reducing the loss of the coil. For general receivers, the diameter of a single-layer coil is typically 12mm - 30mm; for multi-layer coils, it is 6mm - 13mm. However, considering the volume, it is not advisable to exceed the range of 20mm - 25mm. In summary, when winding the coil, always prioritize improving the Q value and reducing the loss as the key considerations.
