Installation Precautions for Air Coils

1. The installation position of the air coil shall comply with design requirements. The assembly position of the air coil and the relative positions of other various components must conform to the design specifications; otherwise, the normal operation of the entire machine will be affected. For example, in a simple semiconductor radio, the high-frequency choke coil and the magnetic antenna should be properly positioned; the antenna air coil and the oscillation air coil should be perpendicular to each other to avoid mutual coupling effects.

2. Visual inspection shall be performed before installing the air coil. Before use, inspect whether the structure of the air coil is firm, whether the turns are loose or detached, whether the lead joints are loose, whether the core rotates smoothly, and whether there are slipping threads, etc. Install the coil only after all these aspects pass the inspection.

3. Fine-tuning methods shall be considered for air coils requiring adjustment during use. Some air coils require fine-tuning during operation, but it is inconvenient to change the number of turns. Therefore, the fine-tuning method shall be considered when selecting the coil. For example, single-layer air coils can adopt the method of moving several turns from the end (i.e., pre-winding 3 to 4 turns at one end of the air coil). During fine-tuning, shifting their position can change the inductance. Practice has proven that this adjustment method can achieve a fine-tuning range of ±2% to ±3% in inductance. For air coils used in shortwave and ultra-shortwave circuits, half a turn is often reserved for fine-tuning; moving or folding this half-turn changes the inductance to achieve adjustment. For multi-layer segmented air coils, fine-tuning can be achieved by moving the relative distance of one segment, with the number of turns in the movable segment accounting for 20% to 30% of the total turns. Practice shows that this fine-tuning range can reach 10% to 15%. For air coils with a magnetic core, the inductance can be fine-tuned by adjusting the core’s position within the air coil tube.

4. Attention shall be paid to maintaining the original inductance of the air coil. During use, do not arbitrarily change the shape, size, or distance between air coils, as this will affect the original inductance. This is especially critical for air coils with higher frequencies (i.e., fewer turns). Therefore, high-frequency air coils currently in use are generally sealed and fixed with high-frequency wax or other dielectric materials.

5. Installation of adjustable air coils shall facilitate adjustment. Adjustable air coils should be installed in an easily accessible position on the machine to facilitate adjusting the inductance of the air coil to achieve optimal operating conditions.
