【79】What is the experience of a supplier that hasn't been changed for twenty years?

When I was sorting through customer files today, I came across an invoice from 2003. The order from Shenzhen Huawei Precision was quietly lying in the folder, with the ink smudging a bit. I took a photo and sent it to the current purchasing director of Huawei, jokingly asking, "Do you think this historical debt should be settled now?" Mr. Li, the purchasing director of Huawei, quickly replied, "Jeannie, I remember this order. That year, we just produced the first domestically-made spectrometer. Twenty years later, you are still our preferred supplier."

This surprised me greatly. In the electronics manufacturing industry, it is almost a norm for customers to re-bid and frequently change suppliers every year. But for a customer like Huawei, which has cooperated for twenty years, we have at least ten such customers. Mr. Sun of Guangzhou Kexi once told me, "When we signed the first contract in 2005, Mr. Wang personally delivered the goods by truck. Now you are listed on the market, and we are still using Golden Eagle's connectors." What surprised me even more was that three years ago, a new supplier offered a 20% lower price for the quotation and the sample test passed, but at the final procurement review meeting, several old engineers all voted against it.

Why was this? I asked many old customers and got very specific answers. The first reason is "people are still there." We set up exclusive files for old customers, recording every technical change they went through from start-up to listing on the market, and we could always prepare solutions in advance.

What touched me the most was Mr. Zhang of Longteng Machinery. Last year, at their company's celebration, they specially invited our founder. Mr. Zhang said on stage, "Twenty years ago, we couldn't afford imported connectors. It was Golden Eagle that accompanied us in making the first domestically-made CNC machine.
